for mine eyes have seen ..

Oxford is so wonderful, wonderful this morning. Finding their way round the intricacies of living and surviving for themselves are this year's new students. To the benign anthropologist they present themselves in many guises. The patrician Head Girl in St Aldates is obviously headed for the former Cardinal's College - Wolsey's folly - now better signified as Ch.Ch. While, in the Cowley Road, the newly entangled couple - one each of the masculine and feminine genders - are no doubt destined for Brookes, up the hill.

The town centre still blossoms with remnants of continental school parties. A plethora of languages delights my ear. We are becoming - dolce dolcissime ma un poco lento - cosmopolitan. Omnes de Saba venient. Yea, they come from the far flung corners of the spherical globe. Gut Yontif. A Happy New Year.

I notice, as a matter of 'sociological fact', nothing more, the possible prelude of a change of fashion. This much too clement sunshine has brought out the floor-length (pavement-length) dresses. Put aside all thoughts of my dusty tantalus, locked and locked away with no sign of key. nunc dimittis servum tuum, domina. 'For mine eyes have seen' the glory, such wonders as dreams are made of. While such passing visions raise a smile on my lips and a jaunt to my ancient tootsies, I shall not suffer myself, yet, to pass over the river and bask on the Other Side. Gratias vobis omnibus immortalibus do.

temptation

I wrestle with myself. It's very early. Hardly more than a minute or two past noon. But I really am attracted to the idea of a gin and tonic to round off a very happiness-making morning. "There's no discouragement / Shall make once relent .. "  Two ice cubes. A generous measure of Gordons. Top up with Schweppes. Bliss.

freshers

Tesco Metro knows what new students need. There's a brilliant display of can openers.
